Don't know if any KC hounds are planning on attending the madness known as the American Royal BBQ this weekend, but if you are, be sure to stop by and say hi to Chileheadmike and myself. "Briskets & Gravy" is the name of our team and we're located at space #610, under the bridge and right across from the food vendors.
Prices for admission have gone up to $10 per day this year, and I don't think they are selling 2 day passes like they have in the past. Another thing that is different this year is that teams will be able to sell BBQ to the general public (pending health dept. inspections of their site). You can buy generic food voucher/tickets that can be redeemed at participating team spaces. It would be a good way to sample lots of Q that hasn't been available in the past. Our team won't be participating, mainly because it would be too big of a hassle to deal with the public when our main goal is just to get really drunk, but not so drunk that we can't compete the next morning (that is a fine, fine line to try and walk...).
From the looks of the team space assignments, they've packed in about another 50 teams this year. That plus the fact that it's the 25th Anniversary pretty much guarantees this will be the biggest crowd in the history of the Royal. For those who have not attended this in the past, it's hard to put the sheer madness of the crowds and the traffic in perspective. Dump the Plaza lighting ceremony in the middle of the packed NASCAR track, and you're getting in the general vicinity of the shoulder to shoulder insanity. It's a good time, but about once a year is enough.
See you there!
