Last month I dropped by Katani Pizza for an early dinner after an appointment nearby at St. Mary's Medical Center. It opened in the fall.

I ordered a medium pizza to eat in, half "Father Figure" (mozzarella, parmesan, smoked salmon, dill, capers, red onions, alfredo sauce) and half "Take a Chance on Me" (pesto sauce, mozzarella, potatoes, zucchini, roasted peppers, garlic). The thinnish crust was a little darker than blonde with a tender bite. On the Father Figure side, it was doughy and underbaked on the top crust, perhaps because of the heavier layer of wet toppings.

Of the two, I had a strong preference for the vegetarian Take a Chance on Me for the dark brown and crunchy crusted fingerling potatoes that looked like sausages. While the zucchini was still a bit too raw, the topping ingredients harmonized better. Father Figure had too thick a layer of cheese that obscured the flavor of the alfredo sauce.

Reheating the leftovers the next day using the cast iron skillet method, the crust was actually improved turning crisp and browner. Take a Chance on Me tasted better to me on the second day than when fresh. The smoked salmon on Father Figure was dried out and too fishy tasting on Day 2.

My medium 14" pizza cost $23, and I can think of many more places where I'd rather spend that for an eat-in pizza. Delivery is free here, or included in the price, and that might be where the value lies. I noticed that the other two customers who appeared to be regulars of this tiny spot were enjoying pasta dishes rather than pizza. The staff were very hospitable even though swamped with delivery orders and I made use of the guest wifi so it was a pleasant experience even if the food's not exciting.
