New Kapadokia Report (both short and long)

I have adopted a new name so people no longer think I am a man, not that there is anything wrong with that...but this is more food related anyway.

On Friday night I abused my proximity to my parents and we all went out to New Kapadokia in Redwood City. New Kapadokia is 14 months old, and used to be, you guessed it, Kapadokia, owned by another set of owners. From what the owner told us, all of the recipes are from a woman (who is still the cook) and were adapted from her home cooking recipes...the proof is in the review, she is a genius with meat!

For those under time constraints I will keep this part brief. I would give it an A for food, a B for service and a B for atmosphere. On the the long part.

We decided to order family style (as always) so we could try (and succeeded almost) most of the menu.

When we sat down the waiter (very cute) came over and offered us a tray with various options, explained each, and we just pointed, and he put them on our table. Very clever marketing I must say, this is what we got:
Babaganus - very tasty, nice smoky egg plant flavor. The bread was a nice and pillowy variety without a lot of pronounce flavor of its own so it was perfect for dipping.

Cevizli Ezme (Walnuts, Turkish red pepper paste, and tomato paste mixed with fresh garlic, olive oil, and a touch of cumin) - This sort of looked like beet colored hummus...but the flavor...WOW! It was creamy and delicious and all the different flavors worked so well together. It was smooth and lively tasting.

Dolmas - just ok, but not bad. They weren't consistent however, some big with a lot of filling, some practically empty.

Lentil balls (can't find name) that were like heartier falafel patties that had not been fried, and were made with lentils. They weren't cooked at all. They sound odd, I know, but tasted GREAT...Mom didn't like, but Dad and I did.

All of the below come with either soup or salad as well as veggies and pilaf. Pilaf was good, not too greasy like it can sometimes be and the veggies were cooked nicely. 3 of us had the salad which was a rendition of what I call Israeli salad (tomato, cucumber, dill, lemon etc.) and Dad had the lentil stew which he really seemed to enjoy. I am pretty sure we were all stuffed by this point, but we soldiered on!

Sarma Beyti Kebab (OH G-D are these GOOD!)
BF ordered this. It was their signature dish, and we were told by our waiter that we had we did. I think all in all these were the all around favorite for overall performance with the kofte VERY close behind. This was not what I expected, as I expected a sandwich, but instead, there was been, rolled in lavas bread and then cut in to pieces and smothered in a slightly sweet, tangy tomato sauce and then hit with some garlic cream. This was amazing. It was a nice change from the rest of the all meat dishes and had some really complex flavors.

Lamb chops
Mom ordered these and her eyes got big and round when she took a bite, I am pretty sure that means she liked them. The lamb in chop form was better than the lamb on the below combo platter #1. It was not gamey at all but had a nice lamby flavor. There were 4 or 5 on the platter and were cooked just right and a touch pink on the insides.

Adana Kebab (Skewered spicy and hot ground beef)
Dad's order. Although listed as spicy, it isn't hot so much as it is tremendously flavor filled beef "log." Ok, so it sounds unappetizing, and actually looks fairly unappetizing, but was still very good. It was a little drier than I like, but dad likes his meat very much dead so it was perfect for him. The flavors were balanced nicely with the heat not too overpowering so as to drown the taste of the beef itself.

Mixed Grill #1 (Lamb chop, 2 köftes, and lamb and chicken shish kebab)
2 stand outs not yet mentioned on this (my) order were the chicken shish and the koftes. Koftes, which BF calls "Mediterranean Meatloaf" were outstanding. I like my hamburger, and I make a MEAN patty with flavors galore, but good LORD were these good. I mean "slap your mama" good, which I didn't as my dad was there, and he is bigger than me. ;) Anyway, these were phenomenal. The beef was of a consistency that made mom and I both wonder who there meat purveyor was and how WE could get this meat for our grill-outs. The spices were SO subtle, but SO dead on. I have been dreaming about these since. They were cooked through but still so moist.
The chicken was too unnervingly good. Good through, and piping hot and STILL so juicy on the inside. Springy texture with good mouth feel. Provided the perfect amount of bite like perfectly cooked chicken should. Not even a hint of toughness.

Other info.
Owner brought out some lemon cooked red cabbage which I thought was good and mom loved, it was a new recipe they were trying.
Beer - light or dark served in a tin beer mug, very cool
Wine - Burlwood or Turkish wine that "tastes like chardonnay," which it actually sort of did.
Desserts - too stuffed to venture, but the baklava didn't look too good.

Great experience, great owners and a MUST try. It is nice to know the old RWC does something great BESIDES tacos!

On a side note a new place called Manzur (or something) openned up 2 store fronts down from "Shooters," but I know nothing about it. Menu looked confused: mix of Italian and Mediterranean.
