Kannafe (the cheesy kind)

Ame Harfster | Aug 22, 2002 07:46 AM

Since spending Ramadan as a tourist in Cairo, and later in Arab East Jerusalem, I've been searching NYC bakeries for that delicious Arabic sweet baked treat- Kannafe. This is the stuff with shredded dough (sometimese orange in color) stuff on top, a sweet drippy honey sauce, and a layer of sweet and slightly chewy cheese on the bottom. It is usually baked on a large round tray like baklava or other such treats. I've found Kannafe without cheese at Mansoura's bakery in Brooklyn (a famous Egyptian Jewish store), but they don't make the stuff with cheese, as they said it has to be eaten right away to be good. I'd travel to the ends of our city to find it! Any leads?
