Kampai Sushi - Redding 04/08

The millvillemurphs family had dinner last night at Kampai Sushi. Of all the sushi places in Redding, it remains our favorite. The service can be hit or miss, but the food has always satisfied. The restaurant is quite small, six tables (four that can seat four, and two tables for two) and six seats at the sushi bar, so be prepared to wait if you arrive in the middle of dinner hour, and definitely don’t plan on bringing a large group.

We have a definite comfort zone when it comes to japanese food and sushi. We ordered edamame and shrimp tempura appetizer for DD 10, chicken teriyaki dinner for DD 12, and the “grown-ups” split a tempura appetizer, spider roll, dragon roll, unagi, hamachi, and french salmon.

DD 10 ate all the edamame, only one shrimp, and declared herself full (not unusual). That left three additional shrimps for the rest of us.The tempura batter was a little thick for my liking, but hubby thought it was great. It was obviously freshly mixed, and didn’t absorb tons of oil from the fying process. The shrimp inside the batter were yummy. The mixed tempura appetizer had two shrimp, potato, mushroom, sweet potato, green bean, carrot, and onion. DD 12 said a couple of the chicken pieces in her teriyaki were dry, but most of them were moist and tender - she ate every last bite.

The sushi was fresh, fresh, fresh - no fishy taste at all. Unagi had none of the pesty little bones we’ve had at other places. The rolls were also fresh and well-composed, although a bit difficult to navigate with chopsticks, since they were so big. The tobiko on the spider roll was just as it should be - clear to look at and firm to touch, until your tongue burst it in your mouth.

The check comes with a little basket of assorted hard and chewy candies - butterscotches, caramels, jolly ranchers, etc. - and this time there was even a chick-o-stix in the basket. We usually leave satisfied with just the meal, but if you’re really dying for some dessert, there’s a frozen yogurt shop next door.

Kampai is at 351 Northpoint Drive #B in Redding, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
