It has probably been a year since I last went to Kagaya and can't now be sure if tonight's disappointment reflects a downturn in performance or an upturn in expectations. We had one regular and one wagyu beef shabu shabu, each of which was accompanied by three amuse-size appetizers: sliced duck breast with radish (fantastic), a broth with a sinewy piece of something close to monkfish, and what they described as a Japanese seabass (dry) with some kind of pesto-- forget what. We both declined the soup and dessert (first time I have been asked if I wanted them, as they are billed as part of the prix fixe) and then were asked if we would mind leaving as they had another reservation to fulfill. All this and two sakes for 175. I think I'd rather wait in line at Shabu Shabu house and splurge on the large for 9.95 or whatever it's going for now.
