As a resident of Quincy, I'm thrilled to death that I will no longer have to drive into Boston or Brookline to get fine sashimi/sushi! Now, I can practically walk.
Kagawa on 1554 Hancock St near Quincy Center is wonderful. Been open for less than a year (I think). Tried it back in Jan 03 and it was wonderful but, I didn't want to post until I tried a second time (last night). It was just as excellent.
The fish is very fresh. You knew this as soon as it is placed at your table. I mean the yellowtail's dark part was actually bright red. The white tuna was perfectly seared around the edges. The bright yellow uni w/ quail egg made my eyes roll back into my head. (I swear that was the freshest uni I've had).
All in all, the sashimi and sushi was well presented on a wooden lacquer boat decorated with lots of shredded daikon and shiso leaves (which I love). The sashimi where nice thick uniform slices. The sushi was well cut and also a decent size. Very satisfying.
The restaurant itself is very nice on the inside. They have a goldfish or koi pond. The sushi bar in the center is up high so, you sit on high bar like stools/chairs. If you have 6 or so people, they have tatami's (those private rooms where you leave your shoes behind).
OK I'll stop. But, If you live or work in the South Shore and convenient to Quincy Center, Kagawa is a "must go". If you work near there, go for lunch. I
heard the the bento lunch boxes were excellent.
