Last night my friend took me to Kabuto for dinner and we sat at the sushi bar and I have to say, that maybe my expectations were a little high, because i had heard really good things about this place, but alas, the food coming out of the kitchen seemed to automatically surpass anything the Sushi chef was giving us.
We spent the whole night pretty much just going for Nigiri, which i realized was probably amistake by the third peice beciase the amount of wasabi on each peice was so overwhelming that i could not taste the fish. When i could taste the fish it was very fresh and delicious, but how would i have known unless i ordered Sashimi, which i figure out by the end of the night would have been the best way to go. We asked the sushi chef if he could make us a handroll without rice, just salmon and tobiko and shiso, and he made us this skimpy little handroll that had one tiny peice of salmon in it that was definetely smaller than the slices he was cutting for sashimi and one peice of shiso and hardly any tobiko and granted it was good, but please, i make better handrools at home in my house. I don't know, it wasn't bad, but it was just not ALL THAT. The best thing we had all night was an order of staemed clams from the kitchen that was without a doubt AMAZING. it made everything else pale in comparison. Needless to say, for the money we spent i have had better sushi bar experiences at Ebisu, where the portions seemed more nicely prepared, the chef seemd more attentive and the sushi far more attractive. I am not sure what all the Hype with Kabuto is, but i will give it one more try.
