Mr. Kabob, the 12Mile&Coolidge Berkley favorite, just opened an “express” satellite east of Coolidge on 16 Mile (“Big Beaver,” across from Maggiano’s), in record time. This new Troy location has a MORE LIMITED menu, done pretty much in a Chipotle format. Nice place and I’ll soon be back.
The menu is confusing. You can choose from a sandwich (I get that concept) or from a salad with hommus on the bottom, or a hommus bowl with salad on top. When I asked what is the difference between the latter two items, I was more or less told to stop being “difficult.” Fine with me. I ordered a “hommus bowl with gyro meat - $8.99,” and a “salad bowl with falafel - $7.99.”
While the lettuce was not blemish free, everything was super fresh. Maybe I got lucky since I arrived at 5PM or so? Once I said my order, the charming girls behind the counter smeared hommus on the bottom of both bowls, added mixed romaine lettuce on both and invited me to cram whatever else I wanted on top. I didn’t want to be greedy or messy, but I am cheap. I’m saving for my kid’s college fund. I timidly said, “how about some cucumber salad, tabbouli, veggies (just recently off grill!), toasted almonds, pickles, olives, tzatziki, pita chips, feta,” and a couple other things I’ve already forgotten; plus, my meat. It was a big pile... a food equivalent to frat party jungle juice. The manager may have been giving his girl a stink eye look, else that was my paranoia. I hope I didn’t get her in trouble. He was nice to me, in any event.
The gyro meat was surprisingly good. I’m not an expert regarding, or a general fan of, that “meat category,” but Mr. Kabob’s version exceeded my expectations. The very coarsely ground falafel was even better. Next time, I’ll have to spring for the (only) extra buck or two to get the grilled beef tenderloin. They seem to be giving away $5 Off On Next Visit coupons with each order right now, so I just might be able to afford it. BTW, I then stopped at Kroger to buy beer to drink with my takeout, and got Bell’s Two Hearted Ale on sale for $7.99/6pk. Hurry!
