Junmae Guey Market on Balboa

Melanie Wong | Mar 27, 2003 01:17 AM

Spotting the familiar logo and name on the red awning of this storefront sent a quiver of excitement down my spine. Could this be the reincarnation of my favorite Cantonese roast duck stand?

Stepping inside to chat with the owner, I learned that he had been partners with the owner of the late Junmae Guey in Chinatown. But they had a falling out many years ago and went their separate ways, each keeping one store.

The roast ducks hanging overhead looked pretty good for this late in the day with taut dark skin. I bought a half. The skin was crisp and well-rendered of excess fat, but the meat was a bit overcooked. It didn’t seem as tasty as my memory of the Chinatown store’s product, lacking the abundance of complex seasonings rubbed inside. But it was a decent effort. I’ll try it again at an earlier hour to catch a fresher product.
