It's finally here! This book has been slowly gathering steam for a few months and the time has come to explore it together. Our Cookbook of the Month (COTM) for July is:

DEEP RUN ROOTS: STORIES & RECIPES FROM MY CORNER OF THE SOUTH by Vivian Howard.

In case you need a refresher, here is the book on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Run-Roots...

Please use this thread for general discussion of the book, including questions and ingredient sourcing. This is also a good place to post links to recipes from the book that are available online.

I gave a lot of thought to whether I should organize the book by the chapter titles (which are named for ingredients) or by the recipe guide (p. vii), which is organized by category. I went back and forth several times and I truly do not think one way is better than the other. I decided to go with the actual chapter titles and pages, as I think this will make it easier to report.

Please use the appropriate reporting threads below to report on recipes:

GROUND CORN; EGGS; TURNIPS, WATERMELON (pp. 18-99)

OYSTERS; PECANS; BEANS & PEAS; FIGS (pp. 100-189)

BLUEBERRIES, SWEET CORN; CUCUMBERS; TOMATOES (pp. 190-281)

RICE; SWEET POTATOES; SUMMER SQUASH; SAUSAGE (pp. 282-377)

PEANUTS; OKRA; COLLARDS; PEACHES (pp. 378-463)

RUTABAGAS; APPLES; BEETS; MUSCADINE GRAPES (p. 464-547)

****ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: There are a lot of compound recipes in this book. Please make a separate post for each recipe that you are reporting on and put it in the appropriate thread, even if the separate recipes contributed to the same overall dish. In the case that the multiple recipes are in the same chapter but have different titles and pages, they should still each get their own post ****

There is also a COMPANION THREAD for those cooking from Ms. Howard's PBS Show:
https://www.chowhound.com/post/july-2...

There was a "COOKING FROM" thread started earlier this year, which contains some wonderful reports on recipes from Deep Run Roots. Please use it for reference only and contribute reports to the COTM threads instead:

Finally, I'd encourage you, at the end of the month, to return to this thread to discuss summations, opinions, and overall views of the book. Happy cooking!
