Jordan's Cafe, catfish

Low End Theory | May 30, 200411:00 PM

Dear Chowhounds,

I have found a new favourite fried catfish, at Jordan's Cafe in Watts (11332 S. Wilmington at 113th). The cornmeal crust was crispy and delicious - comparable to 5Cs, Stevie's, M&M - but the moist melting softness of the catfish inside was especially notable. High marks for collards, heart-attack n' cheese, gigantic peach cobbler and teeth-hurting sweet tea. It's too far from one's usual haunts for a regular stop, but the oxtails and "chittlings" entice future visits.

Visited Uncle Darrow's the next day and while the catfish was a notch down from Jordan's, the oysters, gumbo, jambalaya and supreme friendliness of the folks are still tops. My half-Cajun friend swooned over her crawfish etoufee (special menu, ask), not exactly like Grandma's but these recipes aren't strictly codified like Hainanese chicken rice.

Happy eating,

Low End Theory
