Picked up around 1/2 lb. of marinated, raw al pastor from the Jon's at Sherman Way and Sepulveda. Think it cost something like $1.67. I did quite a bit of trimming (probably about 1/3 of its weight) but it was so inexpensive that I didn't care), cut it into small pieces, then sauteed it over medium heat until crispy with some charred parts. Resulting al pastor was not bad at all...good spicy flavor, not too fatty or sinewy due to the the trimming. I would buy it again.
It was our first time at this Jon's and, comparing it to the huge new Vallarta by the Burbank airport, we were favorably impressed with Jon's. Not as large, but definitely cleaner, with a very nice meat counter, tortilleria, panaderia, etc. There's a sit-down deli section which we didn't investigate closely, but it's smaller than the one at Vallarta. We also bought some corn tortillas, freshly made salsa verde, a hunk of queso de Oaxaca, a bunch of epazote and a couple of avocados. Total was under $11.00 and created quesadillas for last night's dinner.
