My wife and I celebrated our anniversary last Thursday night with dinner at John Bentleys in Redwood City. We had been a fan of his when he was at Los Altos Bar and Grill but somehow had never made it to his signature restaurant here or in Woodside.
We started with the beet and eggplant ravioli with a carrot vinaigrette and the deviled crab, watermelon, and avocado appetizers. I preferred the beet and eggplant ravioli, which had a strong beet flavor with a red sauce (beet?) and orange sauce (carrot). My wife preferred the more subtle flavors of the crab salad.
For the main course my wife had the peppered Ahi. While pepper-crusted Ahi is not a unique dish, my wife declared this to be the best Ahi she has had. The pepper crust and the wasabi sauce combined with the tuna to make every bite really intense. I was only allowed a very small bite, and it was very very good.
I had the Veal special, which was a thick Veal steak with a mushroom-based sauce. This was a very good cut of meat which I thoroughly enjoyed.
For dessert we had the flourless chocolate macadamia cake with gelato (good), and a toffee pudding cake that was divine.
Service from our waitperson (Michael) was perfect. My only complaint, and it is minor, is that the dishes came too fast. We were enjoying our meal so much that we really didnt want it to end.
My wife had been reluctant to go because the restaurant has received inconsistent reviews, but after last nights experience we are both more than ready to go back. The restaurant seems to be doing well, with it near/at capacity the night we were there.
