I went to Joe's Place in Duarte with a few co-workers. It's a sandwich/espresso place. While there are a few sandwiches on the menu board, their claim to fame is that you can customize your sandwiches. By the cash register, you pick up a pre-printed piece of paper that allows you to build your own sandwich. You can choose the bread, the type of toasting (regular vs. panini), sauce, cheese, filling, and veggies. For $6.50, you also get a small scoop of potato salad or cole slaw. An additional $1 gets you a cup of soda or iced tea.
The sandwiches very good. I had a warm roast beef sandwich with spicy mustard. My co-workers had a variety of sandwiches with "Joe's Sauce", which is ranch dressing mixed with fresh dill. I had a my French roll panini-toasted. Yes, I know that's a bad idea, but I've never seen it before, so I couldn't resist. Everyone enjoyed their food.
The place is decorated with cool, kitschy Americana (i.e. stuff you would find from your grandmother's attic unless she happened to live in another country). There are sofas and a lounge area where you can play one of their board games or read a book from their collection. They supposedly have free WiFi, but I didn't bother to verify this claim.
All-in-all, it was a very good place.
