Joanie's Cafe in Palo Alto quick report

Wendy Lai | Nov 10, 200410:59 AM

Some girlfriends and I went to dinner last night. We had planned on going to La Bodeguita, but even for a Tuesday night they were too busy to accommodate us. So we went couple doors down to Joanie's Cafe, because it looked warm and smelled good.

The service was warm and friendly. I would say the food is mostly French bistro. All three of us ordered their specials, beef strognoff and mussels. The beef strognoff was more like beef bourguignon but a bit of sour cream cooked into it. Very tender and flavorful, it was served with rice pilaf and veggies, $16. The mussle were came in a rich butter cream sauce and a side of fries, very delicious as well, $22. We split a flourless dark chocolate cake for dessert. The cake was very moist and had a deep satisfying chocolate mouth feel, $7.

The regular menu had very reasonable priced items like French onion soup, Croque Monsiuer, hamburger etc.

We sat around for hours after our meal and talked and not once did the staff made us feel hurried. I don't live around there, but it has that feel of a nice neighborhood restaurant.
