Almost four years ago I stopped at Jiquilpan’s booth at the Monterey farmers market for an agua fresca. When the owner told me that he was from Salinas, I asked him if he would please sell his healthy fruit snacks in his home area. His silent reply and sad look said more than words.
Fast forward to Christmas Eve, and I’m running an errand at the Northridge Mall in Salinas for my mother. I noticed Jiquilpan's booth near the entrance to Sears. The offerings include fresh fruit cocktails.
But also a freezer full of PALETAS!
The paletas are made by a new place in Soledad, Paleteria y Neveria Las Michoacanas. Flavor selection is somewhat limited in this mall kiosk and mostly paletas de leche made with ice cream mix and few fruit-based ones. The milk-based ones stay fresh longer and that might have something to do with the inventory decisions.
The paletas are $2.50 apiece. I chose cajeta rellena flavor, which is vanilla ice cream with a caramel center. I enjoyed it, but towards the end, the level of sweetness became too cloying.
As I walked to the other end of the mall, I saw that there’s a larger Jiquilpan stall outside the See’s Candy store. This one has raspados, fruit cocktails, snacks, and aguas frescas, but no paleta freezer. I’m more than pleased that this small businessman has found success here.
