jing peking restaurant - hot and sour soup

Upon reading earlier post about hot and sour soup, and with recommendation of Peter's Chungking on College. I figure I should try Chungking and compare to the restaurant JPR that I go regularly. Athough i used to live in the area, i have never try PCK.

I ate my first hss in jing peking 10, 15 years ago when there was only a handful of northern chinese restarauts. And i craved the authenic taste of hss.

I have to report that jing peking has been very inconsistent in their hss. At times bang on in taste, ingredient mix and thickness, other times, way too watery, missed ingredient or diluted taste. so i always hope for the best.

so i went back this week and found that the restaurant has changed hand again. the restaurant is a bit more spacious in the front,a new paint job, overall still homey feel. i was a lone diner, so i ordered hss and minced meat in soya sauce with cucummber. When the hss arrived, i was excited because the color was right (lighter mahogany brown), the ingredient mix was right (bamboo shoots, tofu, pork shreds, wood fungus ear, egg drop, the taste of the soup base was rich not watery. But the soup lack tangyness, i corrected this with the wine vinegar on the table. Viola, this is how i remember hss should taste like. may be a bit more sesame oil will be perfect. overall 8.5/10

minced meat dish did not fare as well. The minced meat was missing in action and overall too garlicky. Although the dish do have "wok taste" which is rare for such a common man dish.

I talked to the female owner, she said she kept only 1 chef from previous owner, so hoping here she kept the right one.

i have to do takeout of hss while i was last in spadina/college. Upon arriving home 1/2 hour later, the soup was still hot when i tasted it. so, it should compare well as if i were staying in the restaurant. I found the color was a bit lighter clear brown, the ingredient mix is "different" - tofu, bamboo shoots, no meat, mushrooms , can't remember if there was woodear fungus. Texture was thinner. the tangyness was right. but the soup base was not as rich. 6/10
