Jfood has a couple of Hits at Campiello (MSP)

Jfood was invited to dinner at Campiellos on the southside and he was curious if his experience was similar to others.

The server first brought the table some Bruschetta with Tomatoes, Basil, Garlic
and Extra-Virgin Olive Oil and the Spicy Fried Calamari with Lemon Parsley Aioli.

The Bruschetta was excellent and was one of the two the highlights of the meal. The tomatoes were marvelous and the basil and garlic were just enough to offset the sweetness of the tomato. It sat atop some wonderful bread. The contra to this dish was the calamari. Being from New England fried calamari is a staple this time of year. The dish prepared by Campiello was spiced way too much and the lemon was infused in the breading as well. Jfood did not like the spicy lemony calamari as well.

Jfood next moved to the Caesar Salad with Toasted Semolina Croutons. The dish was extremely neat in its presentation. The non-cut romaine leafs sat atop each other like corpses in a coffin. The croutons were aligned on each side like the handles of the coffin and the four anchovies were perpendicular to the leaves and gave the impression of the arms across the chest of the corpse. Jfood apologizes for this visual but this is what it looked like. And the taste was barely above some lettuce with grated cheese. Not a big hit with Jfood either.

For Jfood’ entrée he ordered the Balsamic Glazed Short Ribs and Spaghetti with Smoked Tomatoes and Sicilian Onions and a side of Risotto Al Parmigiano. The good news first. The Short ribs were over the top fantastic. These were probably the best short ribs Jfood has eaten in a restaurant. But from there it was a far cry to the rest of the offereing. The spaghetti was so out of place that it was like serving spaghetti with Sushi, it had no place being on the same plate. The risotto was basically some overcooked flavorless minute rice.

So Jfood would highly recommend the Bruschetta if the tomatoes are in season and the short ribs. The rest of the meal should not have been served in a restaurant of this caliber.
