In a thread on our Manhattan board, "bean" endorsed ostrivitsky's (east 12th and ave j) as being a lot better than Chiffon's (Coney Island Ave just south of J). I'm continuing the discussion here.
Not everything at Chiffon's is equally good (in what bakery isn't that true?)...but I like their cheese puffs and cheese danish and their rye bread, plus they're the only consistent source for potato nik (an endangered food!) that I know of. I like a few other things, too, though i can't recall specifics off-hand.
I'm looking forward to trying Ostrivitsky's (what's their specialty?), but no matter what that doesn't mean Chiffon isn't - for the items they do best, and in their genre - one of the best in town.
Schick's is pretty downhill, agreed?
