I remember back in the 70s when Gene Sing and his wife owned and ran the former Jefferson Bowl Coffee Shop in Culver City. Gene used to whip up an off-the-menu dish called beef lo mein which was basically his Cantonese style pan fried chow mein without the veggies (only bean sprouts) covered with thick brown gravy. After the bowling alley closed down in the 80s, he opened up his own restaurant (I believe it was on Sawtelle?) and still offered it minus the complimentary Japanese cabbage tsukemono he served to all of his customers at the bowling alley. My question is (I know Gene and his have passed away), is it still around? Thanks.
You might try Gene Sing on Centinela about a half block south of Washington Blvd. I don't know if they make what you are interested in, but I believe the founder of the restaurant and the person of your story are one in the same.
But isn't that space now the Chinese restaurant New Flavors?

Oh crap - you're right. I have to wonder though if the new name/owners kept any of the menu items?
Thanks. I kinda thought it changed names a ways back? Been there right after Gene moved from the bowling alley but never been back. I had heard Gene passed away years ago and didn't know if they kept up his old recipes? He had unique old Cantonese style recipes which the old Japanese customers and aerospace workers like me appreciated. His old coffee shop was the only Chinese-style place that served complimentary Japanese cabbage tsukemono at each table. Somehow it just brought back memories.
Best fried noodles I have EVER had.......still lust after them.....worked near by in 1980.......can anyone point me to the noodle name? Perhaps another shop that serves the same fare?
Can anyone source the Noodle Gene used? I recall seeing large packages in the shop, would like to resurrect the dish. Anyone? Anyone?
Back in the early 80’s, we worked at McDonnell Douglas on Jefferson and Centinela! We would order special combination fried rice for our lunch half hour. We would call our orders in so it would be ready when we got there! What would come out was a good size mound of fried rice! We would ask for ketchup and it was seasoned just right! I sure do miss those days, Gene Sing had that coffee shop humming!
