Thursday night I ducked out of dinner early without dessert. In the heat of the day, all I wanted was some gelato from Cafe Society. But crossing the bridge to downtown, I discovered that the power was out and Cafe Society had shut down for the day.
My next thought was St. Helena to get a milkshake at Taylor's Refresher. Unfortunately, I arrived at 8:32pm and was informed it was closed and not taking any more orders, not even for a milkshake.
Then, I turned around to head south in search of ice cream again. Maybe gelato at Brix? No, passed that up and decided to check out P. J.'s Steak in Yountville. I'd not been here since its earlier incarnation at Pere Jeanty.
I knew I was in the right place when a glance at the specials blackboard listed the chocolate bag and raspberry milkshake. I'd not had this Chef Jeanty creation since his tenure at Domaine Chandon more than a decade ago! The milkshake was zippy with tart/sweet raspberries (and not a single seed). The chocolate bag had the expertly placed creases, rumpling, and serrated edge of the lunch sacks we used to carry to school. Made of Caillebaut chocolate, the bag and milkshake is perhaps best shared. I couldn't polish off all that chocolate on my own. The barkeep offered to rinse it off and box it for me, but this time I declined.
I got a nice walk down memory lane and a refreshing cool-down for my $12.
