I have spent a few hours reading all the interesting and helpful messages on the Chowhound Board, and I have pages of notes of restaurant suggestions to prove it!! Here's my question, which is a variation on a theme:
I am visiting Montreal for four nights in early July, for the Jazz Fest weekend. Having been to Montreal once before, I know that this fabulous city is full of wonderful restaurants. My friend and I are staying at the Fairmont, and the concierge is going to make reservations for us for the four nights that we are there. However, I am afraid that they will steer us toward the "safe" and potentially pricey choices. On the last trip, we ate at a little French restaurant on Union called "Grand Cafe", (I think!), and it was wonderful, and also at Cavalli. But, given our location, time of the visit, and the fact that we won't have a car, can anyone make any suggestions? We aren't interested in making "the scene", but more in good food in a nice atmosphere. We also don't feel that we need to spend $100+ per person to get a good dinner, as the hotel suggested.
Thanks for your help!
