Thanks for all of the advice yesterday. We ended up having a great dinner at Jar last night...the food was excellent. Here's the rundown:
We tried to start with the fried clams, but they were not on the menu. The waiter said they were having trouble getting the clams, but they hoped to have them sometime soon. He suggested we try the fried oysters, which were a special for the evening. We tried 'em. They were good, but I probably wouldn't order them again. We also had the apple and celery salad, which was quite tasty.
I had the pot roast, which was excellent. The meat was very tender, and the flavor was great. The creamy horseradish sauce, which not necessary, added a nice contrast to the flavor of the meat. What a nice dish for a cold, rainy night!
My boyfriend was trying to decide between the ribeye and the lambshank, and the waiter said the ribeye was definitely the right choice. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and was truly delicious. We also had the purple yams (definitely a highlight of the meal) and delicious french fries. Note that the portions are very large, and both my boyfriend and I have enough leftovers to last us for another meal.
For dessert, we shared the banana cream pie with caramel sauce. The bananas were fresh and the cream very light. The pie is served as an individual round pie (not a slice), and the crust seemed more like something you'd find in a tart rather than a pie. Delicious. Note that the butterscotch pudding was not on the menu.
We found the atmosphere to be quite comfortable, and our waiter was personable and helpful. The service could have been a little bit more on the ball, as we had to keep filling our own wine and water glasses. Not a major complaint, though...the overall experience was great and we will definitely be going back.
