Tonight I got the chance to experience Japonais with a group of 6.

First impression: Exotic and sexy décor, perhaps the best in town. They spent 4 million on the interior. It shows.

The food ranged from mediocre to excellent.

Some standouts: Kobe Carpacio, Pachenko Crumb Oysters, Spicy Octopus Roll, Spicy Scallop Roll, Monk Fish Foie Gras Roll

Pretty tasty, but not excellent: King Crab Rolls, Firecracker Rolls, Unagi Trio, Sashimi Platter (standard, fresh), Filet Mignon and Lobster

Mediocre: Grouper (surprisingly dry for such a buttery fish)

The dessert was excellent. We shared the chocolate mascarpone cake and the beignets and green tee cream.

Service: I guess I’m use to mediocre service at all the “hip” places. Not always on point. For instance, there was lip stick on one of my companion’s glass. Should never happen…especially at a restaurant of this caliber. For some strange reason, they switched servers on us. Not an explanation. But what bothered me the most was when we returned the filet mignon because it was too rare…they simply took the original piece and recooked it. I guess it’s a pet peeve of mine, but if it’s their mistake….give us a new one.

Final Thoughts: Great place to show off and impress a date perhaps. A lot of style…and the substance is close. Some of the food items were quite delicious. Service needs some help, but the people were friendly overall.
