Hope some of you made it out to Japon Bistro's official "grand opening" party last night. I met Kotatsu and Grog there (first time meeting a Chowhound in person!), and it seemed like everyone was having a great time. I had heard that they would serve some free stuff, but when I walked in it totally blew my mind! The entire bar was set up buffet style- nigiri sushi (including TORO- O-Toro (the fattiest), not chu-toro (mid-range)), tuna, salmon, albacore and halibut; maki sushi- california roll, spicy tuna, unagi and avacado, raw oysters with green onion and ponzu served in little champage glasses, broiled salmon with a tangy mayonaisse dressing, broiled tuna, stewed daikon, beef yakitori, fish cake, ikagesou (Japanese style fried calamari), chicken teriyaki, marinated fish with vegetables, Japanese style fried chicken.....just tons of great food- 6 sushi chefs (most were from around the area helping out for the night) all molding sushi, frying up dishes and greeting customers- it was like what heaven must be like, haha. We got in line and piled on the goodies- picked up glasses of complimentary, all you can drink cold sake (they had a traditional vat of sake they broke open to celebrate) and ate to our heart's content. The bar was open if you didn't want sake, but other than that- everything was free (it must have cost them a fortune). It was an amazing show of customer appreciation in hopes that it will bring business to the new place, and I am certain that it will. The proof was in the quality of the food and the genuine warmth of the staff. I was actually touched that they would do so much and really just roll out the red carpet for their current customers and customers they hope to gain. It was definitely a festive vibe; a great time had by all.
