Hi, I'm in the U.S. and I have purchased a set of lovely Japanese rice bowls, very pretty. But they are shorter than expected. They were said to be 2.6" in height and they are actually 2 1/8". They are just over 4.5" wide. It holds exactly one cup of water.
Anyone here of Japanese heritage or knowledge who can advise? Do you just eat your rice on the side out of the rice bowl or do you put any bites of food on top and eat? We eat the Western way with all of our portions on a plate but I wanted to try the Eastern way, one or two bites at a time on the rice bowl, but don't know if these bowls are too small. I tried looking up videos to see examples of bowls of this size in use and it seems most are using bowls a little taller, probably the 2.5"H bowls at least. Should I give it a test drive and try using it myself? I'm wondering if they are practical but people on that listing and on another set of the same but more expensive seem to find the size just right. I'm just thinking a taller bowl would be easier to handle but none are as pretty as these! They have matching plates I want to get, too! But I thought those are for the various dishes, not for each place setting. Please tell me how to make this work, what is customary with this size of a rice bowl?
