Where to get Japanese or Chinese quince?

michaelnrdx | Oct 21, 2010 10:08 PM

I've seen regular quinces (Cydonia oblonga) sold in various grocery stores, but I'm looking for the fruit of the Japanese or Chinese flowering quince (Chaenomeles spp.), also known as mu gua (lit. "wood melon," not to be confused with papaya, which is also called mu gua) in Chinese.

Does anyone know where I can buy the fresh fruits? Maybe in Japantown? I've never seen them at Chinatown (except dried in a Chinese herbal pharmacy). Chaenomeles quinces are more oblong in shape than the regular quinces.
