Finished my first trip for Japan in late September. Choose restaurants largely based upon recs from this board, randomn food blogs, Michelin guide , and concierge suggestions
Harutaka (sushi) booked dinner approx 3weeks out by hotel concierge. Highlight of the trip without question. Both the food and the service were exceptional. Really enjoyed the strong vinegar flavor of the rice. 1/4 of the pieces were really good, 1/2 were excellent , and 1/4 were otherworldly
Iwa (sushi ) booked lunch approx 3 weeks out by hotel concierge. Great value and food. Probably just a step down from Harutaka but not sure if fair to compare lunch to dinner.
Kikanbo (ramen) walked in prime dinner time , no line, very spicy ( and that's with ordering med level of both spices) and just what my SO wanted
Kawakami-an ( soba ) made reservation day before for lunch. Had cold soba with duck broth. The soup made with the the soba water and duck broth at the end was perfect
Tsunahachi (tempura ) walked in during lunch time with no wait and sat at the counter . Had set menu. Solid if unremarkable
Fuku ( yakitori ) made reservation for dinner 1 week ahead. Great experience . Used photo feature of google translate to figure out Japanese only specials menu with fair amount of success.
