My boyfriend and I intended to go to Snack Taverna last night but forgot to write down the address and stupidly forgot to bring out cell phones, so we ended up wandering over to Lupa, where there was an hour and a half wait at 9:30--we were too hungry. So, we turned the corner on Houston and went to Jane. I haven't heard much about the dinners at Jane but have heard that Jane makes a mean brunch. Well, dinner was perfectly pleasant.
The space is huge and was about halfway filled that night, so we got plenty of attention and prompt water refills.
As for the food, it was nothing mindblowing, but it was very well prepared. My boyfriend had a salad to start--it was a chopped salad w/a nice dill dressing and generous helpings of roasted corn, cucumbers, and red peppers. It was a perfect summer starter.
Entrees were hanger steak (him) and cod special (me). He said the hanger steak hit the spot. The small piece I tasted was well cooked (nice and juicey). My cod was served in a generous portion, w/skin still on. It was a perfect crisp contrast to the softer fish underneath. The cod was served with a corn and asparagus melange (perfectly ordinary), and a grilled peach (yum!).
Dessert was "banana brule" (I've been eating too many banana desserts lately, I think...) for me and 'smores for him. The banana brule was actually a bread pudding that was one of the better renditions I've had as of late. The 'smores was a molten chocolate cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a toasted marshmallow. Pretty ordinary, I think.
All of the food at Jane had a charming home-cooked taste to it, which I tend to prefer at a restaurant. I'll definitely be back.
