Herndon has a new addition to the take-out food scene, Jamaica Jamaica. This bare bones carryout offers what appears to be fairly authentic down-home Jamaican cooking.
I tried the jerk chicken platter, which came in a typical three part styrofoam take-out tray. The jerked chicken went in one of the two smaller compartments, fried plantains into the second, and two big scoops of red beans and rice took up the main compartment. The chicken was mildly spicy but very flavorful. I really enjoyed the understated plaintains. Most fried plantains ooze butter or oil. These were starchy and lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.
The rice and beans had plenty of flavor and the beans retained a nice firmness.
A variety of Jamaican drinks was available in the refrigerated case but alas, there was no Ting, the wonderful Jamaican grapefruit.
Other items on the menu included goat and chicken curries. Everything is precooked and waiting to be scooped onto your plate.
Jamaica Jamaica is on Spring Street in Herndon, in the same little plaza that has Mom's Apple Pies and Cheng's Chinese (the latter makes a very good hot and sour soup but falls short in other respects). Jamaica Jamaica is NOT visible from the street but is around the right side of the building.
They're open from 11 to 9. There are two small tables for in-store dining.
