Three new bakeries open in Jamaica Plain, two this month and one earlier this year. The winner is Fiore's Italian Bakery, on South Street just south of the Monument, next to Harvest grocery, with the best rich chocolate ganache cake I've had in a long time, and cinnamon raisin bread that is rich enough to be really good cinnamon toast all by itself. Did I say rich? Lots of other things still not tried; had a bite of my daughter's cupcake which was unmemorable, in contrast the one I, I mean she, had at Modern Pastry in the North End.
Sweet Finnish, just the other side of the Monument on Centre St, calling itself a "European pastry" establishment, is a big disappointment. Went in the day they opened, and they were offering free gingerbread (tasteless and overdone), butterscotch cookies (dry), and carrot cake (tasteless too). Too bad. They opened up next door to a Dunkin Donuts and will have a hard time competing.
Blue Frog is a bit further inbound, just off Centre St. on Greene St. Very passable standard desserts (mousse cakes, fruit tarts), excellent raspberry bars and caramel tarts, unexciting bread.
For a sweet tooth, Blue Frog or Fiore's; when Fiores gets espresso they will be the winner.
