These three communities run together, but each has it's own personality. In three days, we had some nice meals in all three.
Breakfast: We liked Third Street Diner in Jax Beach. $1.99 special was eggs, biscuit, choice of meat and grits (or potatoes, if you must!). The grits were wonderful, made with buttermilk, I was told.
Lunch: In Atlantic Beach, try Ragtime. Very pleasant space, with reasonable prices. I always order the coconut shrimp. The side salads are big enough for two.
New to me, and very good, is Beachside Seafood and Sandwich Company, 120 S. Third St. in Jax Beach. Downstairs is a fish market and a fry cook. A few places to sit and eat. Upstairs is an open air porch, where you can take your food and eat. The shrimp burger is grilled jumbo shrimp with bacon and cheese, on a Kaiser roll. The fried oyster sandwich is made with fresh shucked oysters. The crabcakes are crab, seasoned with Old Bay and enough mayo to hold it together. This makes a very fine sandwich, with a shot of hot sauce. Other fish sandwiches are grouper, Ahi, and perch.
None are over 5.95. They have seafood "baskets" served with fries and slaw, with a choice of up to four items, from 5.95-14.95 Their fried shrimp come highly recommended. They have burgers, hot dogs, a sausage and pepper "hoagie", and cheesesteaks ("The real thing"!). Beer in an ice filled cooler, and "sweet tea" in a dispenser. Loved everything about this place!
Sticky Fingers is a local favorite for BBQ in Atlantic Beach. I didn't like it much. The ribs with a rub were ok.
First Street Grill, in Jax Beach. Sit outside, practically on the beach. Great Mojitos! Good beef selections, lots of "fancified" fish. I had red snapper with a nutty cajun sauce. The appetizer called Bayou Shrimp is terrific. The shrimp are large, perfectly cooked, and served in a spicy Cajun sauce that was great for dunking our bread into. This is a nice evening out place, but you'll still see plenty of folks in shorts and flip flops.
Sliders is a nice little place in Neptune Beach with indoor and outdoor seating. More seafood! Steamed oysters, or on the half shell, marvelous gumbo, and something called a crab roll, which I can't describe, but it's really good. There's a soup, salad, crab roll special, that's a really good value. Go for lunch too.
Rita's Italian Ices, 393 N. 3rd. Jax Beach. We tried the cherry, mango, passion fruit and kiwi-strawberry, all good. They have frozen custard too.
We finally ran out of time, and not a moment too soon!
