this year, for the first time, jackson heights has its own community supported agriculture (csa) program. in the past, i have gone to astoria, but the pickup and volunteering schedule became onerous. now, however, someone has set one up closer to (my) home--starting in may and going through the end of november at st. marks church on 34th and 81st. for those of you unfamiliar with the idea of the csa, you pay for a share at the beginning of the year (now) and then get a bag of fresh vegetables and sometimes fruit (they have an option to buy a fruit share as well--i'm sticking with the basic, as they suggest on the website that long island may not be the best environment for fruit growth)every week. you also volunteer your time a few times during the season to save on overhead. they have a pretty nice looking website which i'll try to link below www.farmspot.org
disclaimer: i'm not related to the farmers or organizers (don't know who they are).
