Jack's Coffee revived the drive-through coffee stand in the parking lot of Nob Hill's shopping center on the south side of Salinas in July. Last week I gave it a try, parking my car nearby and walking over. I thought that there might be a counter for standing customers or a walk-up window out of view but, nope. A window on each of two sides takes orders from drive-through customers. After ordering, I got out of the way to let the car behind me pull-in though thinking about it now, I guess I could have waited for my coffee to be handed to me. To pick up my order, I had to sort of sidle in between that vehicle and the wall and stretch my arm over the counter. Not a comfortable situation for walk-up clientele.
My cappuccino was $4 or about 50¢ more than the going rate elsewhere. Jack's uses America's Best Coffee from Oakland http://www.ambestcoffee.com/ , Clover milk, and a reverse osmosis water filtration system. My capp had a decidedly bitter aftertaste. Judging from the overly hot temperature of the beverage in a paper cup with a collar and the bitter note, I imagine that the water temperature used for brewing is too high.
Service was very friendly. Peering inside the coffee shack, things looked neat as a pin. While I won't be ordering espresso drinks here again, I might try a cold brew some time.
