Checked out Silver Spring's new restaurant Jackies recently and was impressed. The place looks great and was very unSilverSpring-like, meaning funky with an interesting decor. We had the grilled sea food appetizer which included calamari, shrimp, and scallop in a (mustard?) sauce and the grilled peppers with yucca and romanesco sauce. Both were excellent -- particularly the seafood and the romanesco sauce. Entrees were an Elvis burger (burger with pimento cheese) and a pimento cheese sandwhich. Burger was great and a perfect medium rare and the pimento cheese okay -- I am from the South and love pimento cheese and was quite happy to see it on the menu. Nice selection of wines by the glass that were well priced, particularly the selection of whites.
Service was, like so many places, fair: good intentions but slow. Our requests were all addressed in a friendly and positive fashion, though.
It is great to have a non-chain, moderatately priced restaurant in Silver Spring that serves quality food. Of restaurants in the greater area, I would compare it to The Red Cafe and Colorado Kitchen. Based on one visit, I think it is better than the Red Dog, and, at this point, not quite as good as the Colorado Kitchen, although it offers a more elegant dining experience than the Colorado Kitchen.
