Izzy's Steak and Chop raises its flag on the Peninsula

Ken Hoffman | Aug 13, 200412:29 PM     5

It feels like a great neighbourhood joint with no neighbours. The stand alone building that houses the new Izzy's Steak and Chop sits rather forlornly at the end of the San Carlos airport runway. It opened 6 weeks ago with no fanfare. It has been packed since day one with a very enthusiastic ( and grateful) steak house crowd in the mood for great grilled meats and even greater sides.

With all of one week of training for the cooking staff, this book lined, leather chaired ode to steakhouse canon, has duplicated the hearty deliciousness of its San Francisco progenitor to perfection. No pale suburban facsimile this. The New York strip was perfectly prepared and came with a double serving of the gouda drowned scalloped potatoes that could barely be contained by the margins of the plate. The prime rib was also fabulously juicy and pink and with it came the equally famous creamed spinach, also spiked with gouda (I wonder if Dutch cheesemakers have even begun to understand the power of their cheese).

I am grateful that now, even we south of San Francisco
philistines and barbarians, have the opportunity to dine like the privileged few of Fog City.
