Izzy's for Authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine

lel | Apr 24, 2003 02:11 PM

Visited Izzy's in Cambridge this weekend and felt a need to inform Hounds of this downright authentic meal. The small -- approximately 7 tables -- establishment was bustling at 11:45 am last Saturday. Every table was filled and several customers waited for takeout orders. Orders are palced at the counter and food is delivered to your table.

We began with a Cuban sandwich. I've tried "Cubanos" at several local eateries and have never had one that compares to Izzy's. The roast pork within the sandwich was juicy (a feat within itself as Puerto Rican style pork, if not cooked correctly, can become dry & stringy) and the counterman (Izzy?) insisted on adding a special sauce. Wow, was he on-the-money! The sauce added a unique and unforgettable flavor. We also ordered goat which was accompanied by rice, beans and a salad. The goat was tremendous and the dish included the unexpected bonus of pieces of smoked shoulder. The rice & beans were perfect. We also ordered a side of plaintains (platanos) which were golden brown and sweet as sugar.

In a word, the meal was delicious and the total bill with 2 beverages was under $15.
