Excited about a new izakaya in my neighborhood, my husband and I went to Izakaya Mai last Wed. We were the first people to get seated that evening, but the restaurant was full (occupied by mostly Japanese business men) by the time we left. I hate to report this, but dispite our excitement, we were not impressed with the quality of food.
We ordered some sushi and rolls to start. And we sampled a couple of dishes from both the menu and what was posted on a white board (shrimp tempura, Gindara, hokke). Tempura batter was too thick and was not crispy. The dipping sauce was very bland. Both grilled fish dishes we ordered (gindara & hokke) were just so so (they were served not hot at all. Seemed like they were "lightly" re-heated). Fish used in sushi was not fresh. There was ONE lady who greet, VERY slow, which wouldn't have bothered me if we liked the food...
We saw a sign from outside "Oden" when we left. I would be curious to know if their oden is decent. I know the place just opened, so I don't mind giving another chance IF I hear back from others that the quality of the food improved.
