Driving home from work tonight in this heat, left me not wanting to cook. As I exit the freeway I'm driving up Van Nuys Blvd. and first see "House of Taka" not sure of spelling and went in. Within 30 seconds I turned around and left, yes I agree-the way the sushi bar was set up and the packed house at 5:30 wasn't what I was after. Instead I drove up to Ventura Blvd. and trusted the suggestions from this board over to Iwata Sushi, yes parking was a nightmare yet I managed. As I enter it was peaceful with only 2 other people in there-beautiful! I order me up a saki & saporo and dive into what my expectations have built up. Now I'm a big eater and ordered as if I was at a buffet. I start with a yellow tail & tuna sushi cuts, wow such delicate soft fresh bites entered my mouth-YUM! Time to sip on my drinks and in between their complimentary little salad which resembled seeweed yet not sure what it was. From there I studied the specials on their menu, jumpo Santa Barbara sweet shrimp-HUGE! I enjoyed that fully and from there the jumbo scallops equally as good. In talking to the sushi chef in between bites & he ends up being a surfer-small talk, he tells me they have a hi end yellow tail cut under a different name yet I chose to go with some albacore, he prepared it perfectly with garlic and a touch of wasabi on top. All I can say was this was the dish that melted in mouth like butter. For some people its a steak yet the key to my heart is fresh sushi. I will return and return to this spot, still hungry I had a calamari roll and finished with fresh water eal, all this with drinks & tip $50.00 and I have zero regrets and feel complete. Thank you Diane for the advise. Now, what should I try here next visit? :>)
