Are the Italians correct? Should cheese not be added to seafood

Damn italians. They know their seafood...they know their cheeses...is there something to their tradition of not mixing cheese and fish. No parmesan on zupa de pesce or clam sauce for example.

The french dont seem to share this aversion: monkfish in cream sauces, caviar and eggs. Is this cultural peculiarity or is there something to the italian belief?
