Italian Ladyfingers vs American

My friend and I got into a debate last night at an Italian restaurant.
While having dessert I explained to her that Italian ladyfingers (savoiardi) are what is used in tiramisu. She said no, that when she was in Argentina and Brazil her Italian friends from Italy brought in ladyfingers from Italy and they were not the savoiardi that I have seen recommended in cookbooks and from Italians markets. Are the ladyfingers used in America different?
