Italian Food in Canberra, Australia?

Emily Cotlier | Mar 19, 2001 09:32 PM

Hail fellow chowhounds! A business trip is taking me to Canberra, Australia for several days (the 27th to 30th, leaving the AM of the 31st). I was hoping to take this opportunity to get some decent Italian food.

So, please, let me know about any good Italian in Canberra, especially less-fancy, more family-style places. Classic Neapolitan/Italian pizza, and gnocchi, are particular favorites.

"Italian food? In Canberra?" It may sound strange. However, I live in NZ where, in my experience, there are only two and a half Italian restaraunts worthy of the name, and one is a good 300 kilometres from where I live. Don't even ask what they do to pizzas in New Zealand--it's too tragic. This is a comedown after being able to dine in South Philly, and I miss my feathery mozzarella, the briny roasted peppers, the log-sized provolone..... Australia has become home to many more Italian immigrants than New Zealand, and thus has more noteworthy Italian food. Or so I am told.

Many many thanks!
