Having visited Miami's Little Havana a few times, I have fallen hard for the greasy simplicity of a nice Cuban sandwich.
Despite a few tries, I have not found a comparable one here in LA. A quick list:
EL COCHINITO---Despite the excellence of basically everything they serve, the 2 Cuban sandwiches I've ordered are way off the mark---soggy and limp.
PORTO's---Had some good ones here a year or so ago. A recent visit produced a mealy, dry, somewhat generic sandwich. Not properly pressed, which is a cardinal Cuban sandwich sin, IMO. Have not given up yet.
XIOMARA (on Melrose)---Am fortunate to not have subjected myself to the sandwich here. Posters on this board (and my Cuban GF!) have reported that their version may quite simply be the worst version served up anywhere.
Curiously, I just had a fairly decent Cuban sandwich at KOKOMO's in the Farmer's Market for lunch today. Not quite buttery enough, but it was definitely in the ball park.
Any advice from LA Hounds?
