Just got back from a vacation to Maine (see New England Board post linked below), where it seems that absolutely superb onion rings are available at just about every roadside diner. Delicious, fresh rings, sliced about 3/8th of an inch thick, fried up moist, sweet and toothsome, with just the thinnest possible coating of crunchy batter that's barely able to hang on to the onion once it's bitten into. Always served blazing hot, fresh out of the fryer.
So, does the foregoing description make you think of anyplace in LA? (Or even greater LA; I'll drive for rings.) If so, please, please advise. I think I'm starting to experience symptoms of withdrawal.
