Iowa City - Post Tornado Updates

KC-Jane | Apr 15, 2006 08:12 AM

The day after the F2 tornado hit Iowa City on Thu-Apr-13, one of the headlines read "Few Buildings Escaped Unscathed."

The article then said, "The tornado that ripped the heart of downtown and the University of Iowa campus left behind a 3½-mile-long path of damage with winds of up to 150 mph, officials said Friday."

As a fan of Iowa City and eateries there, I thought this might be a good place to post what we know about various establishments in the campus/downtown area and beyond.

So far, I've gathered the following information from various media sources:

Happy Joe's Pizza at 225 S Gilbert - Destroyed

Tony's Grill at 320 E. Burlington - Wall busted out and leaning against neighboring building; scheduled for demolition.

Dairy Queen at 526 S Riverside Dr - Destroyed

Union Bar at 121 E College and the neighboring Martini's and other businesses in the pedestrian mall downtown - Roof and other damaged; closed for now.

Bread Garden Bakery & Cafe and Starbucks on Clinton - Yellow caution tape; damage to be determined.

The Mill at 120 E. Burlington Street sustained minor damage but reopened at 4 p.m. Friday. Most of the vehicles owned by patrons and staff in the vicinity sustained some degree of damage from minor to extensive.

Does anyone else have details on these or other Iowa City eateries?
