I was looking for info specifically on pre-infusion and came across this article. I was glad to hear his description of the process matches what my Heat Exchange boiler machine provides, but also found his observations of coffee engineering (going back more than 30 years!), machine design, "third wave" espresso, and roasting approaches, to be very interesting.
