I'm planning a dinner for next weekend, and I'm stumped for the right dessert. I'm looking for something fun and showy, but fitting in character with the dinner I'm serving, very autumnal, a little Eastern European, but hopefully not dowdy. This is what I'm having:
Hot spiced vodka with honey
Undetermined nibbles to make sure no one gets too drunk before dinner (maybe caviar on toasts)
Cold steamed mixed vegetables in a walnut cream sauce (plated)
Meatballs with pomegranate sauce (plated with fresh mint and pomegranate seeds) - I know the placement of this is a bit weird, but my boyfriend really wants to make this dish and plate it, and the man is stubborn. Sometimes, you just have to give in.
Roasted chickens stuffed with sauerkraut and dried prunes
Relishes and pickles: Cranberry/horseradish relish, onion-pomegranate relish, pickled mushrooms
I've gone through a dozen ideas - baklava (too boring by itself), honey-pistachio ice cream in phyllo cups (too repetitive with the spiced honey drink at the start), coffee ice cream in chocolate meringue cups (too French), and so on. Can't find just the right thing. I make a nice pear-cardamom pie, I could use the filling in a strudel or beggar's purse, but what to serve with it? Would want an ice cream or a sauce and I can't think of one. I also have some dried cherries hanging around I could use somehow.... Anyone have any ideas?
