Overlook all of not great Mexican places around Philly ( I love Mexican food more than anyone)and run don't walk to Freddy and Tony's Puerto Rican, eat in or take out joint at 2nd and Alleghany in Very North Philly. Pernil is pork shoulder laced with tons of FRESH garlic, roasted slowly for hours, skin all crispy if you get there early in the day prepared and served up fresh daily at this fantastic, tropical themed place. It'll set you back 5 smackers a lb if you get it to go. The marvelous counter guy chops it all up for you, I always tear the package open as soon as I get in the car. (Greasy steering wheel = TRUE Chow Hound). I buy 5 lbs for a party,we wrap it in corn tortillas, slather with salsa, Mexican fresh cheese and have the best, freshest tacos in town. Or buy on pound and eat it all yourself. Our fearless Jim Leff, the Top Dog is always ranting about real true deep delishiousness folks. This is it,the real thing. I'm sure he would lick his canines, throw back his head and howl in delight!!!!!
