Initiating a Sushi Virgin

Biggie Mac | Jul 20, 200504:31 AM

I have a friend who has never tried sushi before. In fact, until a few weeks ago he had never before seen a squid. He didn't know what it was until I ordered a fried calamari plate to share with him. He didn't even know what clams and mussels are. No, he's a perfectly normal guy; it's just that he's from a landlocked region of a faraway land where they don't have much food from the ocean.

I'm trying to familiarize him with various seafood items. Anyway, he's progressing by leaps and bounds and is now willing to give sushi a try. I love sushi, but honestly, I'm not very familiar with sushi establishments in LA. I'm looking for one that's:

1. Moderate to inexpensive
2. With table seating
3. Featuring a strong selection of non-sushi items
3. Located in or near to the Westside
4. And endowed with reliably fresh fish

In short, I'm looking for a sushi bar with training wheels for my friend--a place where he can chow down on uni and soft roe if he so desires, but also a place where he can retreat to chicken teriyaki if he finds the monkfish liver to be too traumatizing.

Can anyone help? Many thanks in advance.
